Our city ordinance currently forbids the keeping of any poultry within city limits, and this affects many residents who wish to keep chickens for egg production, a natural form of pest control, and more sustainable living. We propose a change in this regulation to allow chickens, excluding roosters, to be raised in our community. The noise disturbance, typically associated with roosters, would still be kept in check while the benefits of chickens would be made available to residents. Many cities across the United States, including New York, Seattle, and Chicago, have revised their urban livestock laws to allow for chickens in urban settings, without impactful incidences of nuisance or disease (source: National Conference of State Legislatures, 2019). With proper guidelines for chicken-keeping, our city could enjoy the benefits of fresh eggs, natural pest control and a reduction in kitchen waste.
