Allow the Establishment of an Emergency Shelter on 37th Street

The Issue

Having personally experienced homelessness, I can testify that access to a shelter is not just an amenity but a necessity for those living on the fringes. Once, I was part of the 37th Street establishment that the planning commission now denies for emergency shelter use, witnessing first-hand how a place like this could offer a chance at rebuilding lives.

While transitioning out of homelessness, this building provided crucial support for individuals in similar circumstances as me by offering either temporary or permanent Single-Room Occupancy (SRO). The city, having approved permits previously, even noted the existence of just two minor issues during a fire department safety check.

Today, it is disappointing to see this invaluable resource being misjudged. The decision is largely influenced by the 'Not in my backyard' (NIMBY) mentality persisting in our neighborhood. This mentality is not only discriminative but also hinders the necessary support for us to help our fellow citizens on the verge of homelessness.

Data from the National Alliance to End Homelessness shows that on a single night in 2020 over 580,000 people were homeless in the United States, emphasizing the significance of shelters such as our disputed establishment.

Let us appeal this disapproval, reminding the planning commission to prioritize lives and refocus our community's perceptions towards solidarity and inclusivity. Please, sign the petition and let's restore the 37th Street establishment for what it truly is - A beacon of hope. Together, we can eradicate discrimination, drive positive change, and ensure homes for everyone.
