The Issue

I wear the Tilak-Chandlo, a significant religious symbol representing peace, devotion, and identity for members of the BAPS Swaminarayan community. Despite its importance, I face discrimination and prejudice at my school and workplace for wearing it. It's disheartening to experience negativity for expressing my cultural and religious beliefs, which are integral to who I am.

The Tilak-Chandlo is a religious mark featuring a yellow U-shaped tilak and a red dot in the center, representing humility, divinity, and spiritual awakening. For many followers of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, it's not just a tradition but a daily affirmation of faith and commitment to dharma. It's crucial for individuals to be able to express their beliefs without fear of discrimination or ridicule.

In a multicultural and diverse society, it's vital that educational institutions and workplaces champion inclusivity and diversity, allowing everyone to express themselves freely without fear of repercussion. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, promoting freedom of religious expression significantly enhances the sense of belonging among individuals in diverse environments.

There are countless success stories of workplaces and schools benefitting from fostering an inclusive atmosphere. When people are allowed to freely express their inner beliefs, it leads to improved morale, higher productivity, and a warmer, more accepting environment for everyone.

Discriminating against the Tilak-Chandlo is not only a violation of personal freedoms but undermines the principles of equality and respect. I urge schools, workplaces, and governing bodies to formally acknowledge the right to wear religious symbols like the Tilak-Chandlo and protect individuals from discrimination.

Please join me in calling for a change to allow and respect the wearing of the Tilak-Chandlo in all schools and workplaces. Together, we can strive for a society that embraces diversity, nurtures acceptance, and celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures that make us unique. Sign this petition to stand up for religious freedom and inclusivity.
