Allow textbook fees to be added to HECS for Western Sydney Law Students
The issue
As a law student at Western Sydney University, I've experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing prescribed textbooks. It's not just my issue; it's a problem for many of my peers across the law school. The library, while resourceful, has a limited number of copies available to share amongst a large cohort of students. Coupled with the high cost of individual textbook purchases, accessing essential learning materials has become incredibly difficult for many.
Textbooks are an integral part of our legal education, directly impacting our ability to succeed in our studies. Yet, the financial burden of sourcing (the required books and not out of date print) and purchasing these materials out of pocket often adds to the already considerable stress of managing university fees and living expenses, particularly if you're surviving on a student's budget.
A viable solution is to allow law students to bundle the cost of these textbooks into our Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) fees. This can be facilitated by a simple checkbox option when enrolling for courses: students can opt to include the prescribed textbooks in their fees. This not only ensures that everyone has access, but it also opens up possibilities for the university to negotiate bulk purchase discounts, saving money for both students and the institution.
Incorporating textbook costs into the HECS scheme would provide every law student with equal and timely access to the materials critical to our education. Other universities could also consider this model, setting a precedent that fosters equity and removes barriers created by financial hardship.
I urge Western Sydney University to consider this proposal seriously and act upon it to support their law students better.
