The Issue

I am a passionate hunter and an avid outdoorsman who cherishes the time I spend on public lands in South Carolina. However, the current restriction that prohibits hunting on Sundays on state public lands feels like a penalty for those of us who work Monday through Friday and don't own private land. It's more than just a hobby—it's a way of life and a vital connection to the great outdoors that I share with many fellow community members.

Being limited to just one day a week is not only unfair but also restricts us from fully enjoying our outdoor traditions and from supporting conservation efforts through hunting permits and excise taxes on hunting gear. According to a report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Sunday hunting can significantly contribute to local economies and hunter retention.

Several states across the country have recognized the benefits of allowing Sunday hunting. In Pennsylvania, the recent allowance of Sunday hunting days showed a measurable increase in hunting participation and economic benefits within the first year. South Carolina could witness similar positive impacts.

Beyond the clear economic and participation benefits, lifting the Sunday hunting ban on South Carolina's public lands is a matter of equity and access. For many working individuals and families who don't own private land, Saturdays are often filled with other essential commitments. Denying them the opportunity to hunt on Sundays effectively cuts their available hunting time in half, creating an unfair disadvantage compared to those with private land access or more flexible schedules. This isn't just about a hobby; it's about preserving a cultural heritage and ensuring that public lands truly serve all South Carolinians. Allowing Sunday hunting would align our state with progressive conservation and recreational policies, ultimately enriching our communities and strengthening our commitment to wildlife management.

We are calling upon the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and state legislators to reconsider this outdated regulation. Let us follow the lead of states that have embraced more inclusive policies and have seen their communities thrive as a result.

Sign this petition to help us bring about a change that not only aligns with the needs of South Carolinians who do not own private land but also supports the sustainable management of our public resources. Please support this initiative to allow Sunday hunting on public lands in South Carolina.
