Why Students Should Be Allowed to Keep Their Phones on Their Person and Use Them During Lunch

I believe students that all students in Massachusetts schools should be allowed to keep their phones on their person during the school day and have reasonable access to them during lunch. This proposal is not about students being on their phones constantly or using them during class when they are supposed to be learning. Instead, it is about finding a reasonable balance between maintaining a focused learning environment and recognizing the importance of communication, safety, and personal responsibility. Students should be trusted to keep their phones secured in their pockets, backpacks, or another safe place rather than being required to leave them in a locked box in a classroom, or other location away from them. One of the biggest reasons students should be able to keep their phones with them is school safety. In an emergency situation, having access to a phone could allow a student to contact a parent, guardian, emergency services, or another trusted person when appropriate. Students may also need to receive important information from their families during the school day, especially when unexpected situations occur. Phones can also be important for students who need to communicate with their families about transportation, after-school activities, work schedules, medical appointments, or changes to their plans. Allowing phone use during lunch would also give students an appropriate and designated time to check messages, communicate with family and friends, listen to music with headphones if permitted, or simply take a mental break after classes. Lunch is different from instructional time, and students should have some personal time during the school day where reasonable phone use is permitted. A lunch-only policy would also make it easier for staff to enforce expectations because students would know exactly when phones are and are not allowed to be used. Keeping phones on students rather than collecting or storing them could also reduce the possibility of phones being lost, damaged, stolen, or accidentally given to the wrong person. Most importantly, this proposal could encourage students to practice responsible technology use instead of simply removing access altogether. Students should be taught how to use technology appropriately and responsibly, because phones are a normal part of everyday life and will continue to be important as students become adults. We believe a policy that allows phones to remain on students while limiting their use during instructional time, with reasonable access during lunch, would provide a better balance between school rules, student responsibility, family communication, and safety. We are asking the school administration to consider listening to student concerns and reviewing the current policy to determine whether a more flexible and safety-conscious phone policy could be implemented.
