Allow students to use phones during lunch and study halls

The Issue

I was in the middle of a Clash Royale game, my fingers in a frenzy, my strategy on point my goblin barrel placed with precision , only to be abruptly interrupted as the class started and my teacher ordered me to put my phone away all of this during study hall of all classes. Moments like these might seem trivial, but they highlight a broader issue that affects hundreds of students like me every day: the inability to use our phones during unstructured times such as lunch or study halls which note are periods for us to allow us to relax and ease a bit before continuing out learning.

In an age where technology is an integral part of our lives, restricting students from accessing their phones during non-instructional periods is outdated and dismissive of the personal freedom we should be granted as responsible students. Study halls and lunch breaks are intended for students to manage their own time responsibly, whether that be catching up on social connections, relaxing with a game, or organizing their academics.

Statistics show that allowing students to responsibly manage their phone time can enhance productivity, provide necessary mental breaks, and prepare them for real-world time management. According to a study by Common Sense Media, 50% of teenagers agree that smartphones can positively contribute to their education if used wisely. By allowing students to use phones during lunch and study halls, we are not only respecting their autonomy but also encouraging them to build skills in digital literacy, time management, and self-discipline while improving moral and increasing work productivity during the typical school day.

Moreover, the argument that phones are purely a distraction is outdated; instead, they serve as tools for learning, creativity, and emergency communication. Consider the situation of a student needing to coordinate a project, quickly access an online resource, or simply reach out to a family member in an emergency. Phones are lifelines.

We urge school administrations to reconsider their stance on phone usage and recognize the potential benefits of allowing students to use their devices during lunch and study halls. By signing this petition, you're supporting a future where students can balance educational responsibilities with personal tech usage, fostering a more well-rounded, independent, and prepared generation of learners. Please sign this petition to change school policy and support responsible phone use.
