The Issue

The San Bernardino Unified School District's decision to lock up students' (and possibly teachers') phones during class periods is raising serious concerns among parents and students alike. This policy limits access to potentially life-saving communication devices at a time when our society is unfortunately plagued with the reality of school shootings and unexpected lockdowns.

As a parent who trusts this district with my child's safety, I find the inability for students to quickly access their phones in emergencies troubling. Imagine, for instance, a lockdown situation during the 2024-2025 school year. If students are unable to reach emergency services or contact their families, it could exacerbate chaos and prevent timely help.

In high-stress situations, such as active shooter events or sudden lockdowns, the ability to communicate can make all the difference. During panic, when people may not think clearly, the time taken to retrieve a phone from a secured pouch could delay critical actions. Meanwhile, phones kept in backpacks allow quicker access and faster communication, providing a crucial safety net for our children.

Furthermore, school safety plans and drills often emphasize the importance of staying informed and connected, which contradictions this phone policy. While the intention might be to minimize distractions in class, it is imperative that our children's safety not be compromised in pursuit of educational focus.

To address the issue, I propose a policy modification where students can keep their phones in their backpacks, accessible but on silent mode during class hours. This solution balances the need for focus in school with the ability to swiftly contact emergency services or family in a crisis. Importantly, it reassures us as parents that our children have another line of safety at their fingertips.

I urge the San Bernardino Unified School District to reconsider this risky policy with the safety of all students in mind. Please join me in signing this petition to protect our children's wellbeing while ensuring their right to immediate communication in emergencies.
