My name is anonymous, and I am a public high school student. Recently, during gym class, somebody covertly placed a vaping device in my bag and reported it to the school administration. Although the vaping device was not mine, I was unable to contest this because the rules regard this as possession, and I had no means to prove my innocence. The only option open to me was to accept a guilty verdict plus a $70 fine, a cost that is too burdensome for me considering I did nothing wrong.

This unjust situation raises a serious question and concern about the protection of students in the public school system. The focus should be on education, fostering a conducive learning environment, and upholding a just system, not hindering students with unwarranted accusations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2020, about 3.6 million U.S. youth reported current (past month) e-cigarette use. Taking this into account, it is unlikely that all allegations of vaping are accurate and fair. In such cases, students should have a just platform to defend themselves.

I propose that public schools should introduce a provision which allows students to contest vaping claims made against them. This provision should strike a fair balance between the need to discourage vaping in schools and to protect innocent students from false allegations.
