Allow Students the Regulated Usage of Phones at McNicholas High School

The Issue

As a student at McNicholas High School, I understand the value of our mobile phones in enhancing our learning experience. Our phones aren't just for leisure; we oftentimes use them for educational purposes. For instance, playing instrumental music to drown out the background noise aids in concentration while reading. These devices grant us access to a myriad of educational resources at our fingertips, thereby expanding our learning beyond the classroom walls.

Unfortunately, our current school policy restricts the use of these powerful devices during study halls and lunch — times when we should have the liberty to utilize them for personal and academic growth. While we respect our school's efforts to prevent distractions or misuse of these devices, completely banning them is counterproductive.

Studies clearly demonstrate that when properly utilised, mobile technology can enhance learning. According to a report by the Center for Educational Policy and Leadership, students who used mobile devices for studying scored significantly higher on standardized tests than those who didn't (CEPL, 2016).

In light of these facts, we are urging Mcnick to reconsider and amend the policy on phone use. By promoting regulated usage, rather than an outright ban, we encourage responsible digital citizenship and advocate for a learning environment that adapts to the modern digital age. Please lend your support to this cause by signing the petition. Let's grant the students of McNicholas High School more academic freedom.
