The Issue

Growing up in DeKalb County, I have always appreciated the emphasis that our local schools put on both educational rigour and creativity. Recently, my friends and I discovered that DeKalb County Schools is considering deleting several educational apps, including Minecraft Education, a platform we frequently use to develop our artistic creativity and engineering skills through redstone contraptions. For many of us students, apps like Minecraft Education Edu aren’t merely tools; they represent a modern learning experience that integrates the theoretical aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with practical application and innovative thinking.

The importance of technology in education cannot be overstated. According to a report by the National Centre for Education Statistics, approximately 94% of schools provide students with access to digital learning tools that enhance productivity and offer new learning opportunities. Apps like Minecraft Education allow students to engage in project-based learning, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving.

Currently, the decision-making process regarding which apps to keep or delete does not involve direct input from the very students who are affected by these changes. Schools prioritise educational outcomes and resources, but understanding student preferences and needs should play a crucial role in these choices. As students, we are the primary users and benefit directly from technologies that complement traditional educational frameworks.

We propose the implementation of a decision-making poll involving students as an essential part of the app evaluation process. Allowing students to express their opinions on which tools aid their learning journey can provide meaningful insights to educators and administrators.

By signing this petition, you help us urge the DeKalb County School Board to actively include student feedback in the decision-making process regarding educational apps like Minecraft Education. Not only does this empower students to take responsibility for their own learning, but it also paves the way for a more inclusive, happy, and forward-thinking educational environment. Please join us in supporting student voice and choice in our schools by signing this petition.
