The Issue

I am a resident of Stratford, a parent with two kids to feed, and like many in our community, I am facing the continuous rise in grocery prices. To counter this, I started a small vegetable garden in my front yard intending to provide fresh, nutritious food for my family. Gardening isn't just about the plants for us; it's about resilience, sustainability, and self-sufficiency. However, recently, I received a notice from bylaw enforcement stating my garden is not permissible. This oversight is not just a personal burden; it hampers our collective ability to access healthy, affordable food during challenging economic times.

I'm not alone in this venture. Across Stratford, many families share my commitment to growing their food, contributing positively to the environment and reducing food insecurity. The benefits of personal gardens extend beyond mere cost savings; they boost physical and mental health, encourage community building, and safeguard the environment by reducing food miles. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, urban gardens can supply about 20% of the world’s food, making them an invaluable resource in the fight against hunger.

Regrettably, the current bylaws are outdated and seem to be out of touch with modern realities and necessities. They fail to acknowledge the role personal gardening can play in creating resilient communities. This petition seeks to urge local authorities to reconsider these outdated regulations and support residents who choose to grow their own produce. Amendments should be made to allow responsible garden cultivation in front yards, incorporating appropriate guidelines to ensure aesthetic harmony and safety.

Every signature brings us a step closer to aligning our local laws with sustainable practices. It signifies a vote for self-sufficiency, health, and a greener Stratford. Please join me in supporting the right to grow our own food; let’s create a community where every resident has the freedom to cultivate their own vegetables without fear of penalties. Sign and help create a future where fresh, homegrown food is accessible to all Stratford residents.
