The Issue

Experiencing a traumatic tornado on April 27th, 2011, changed my life forever. The town I called home was nearly wiped out, including the place where I lived. I survived, but many others weren't as fortunate. Since then, the threat of severe weather has been more than a source of anxiety—it's a dire reminder of the necessity for safety measures, especially for those living in vulnerable structures like mobile homes.

In the Wildflower Community of Albion, Michigan, many residents, including myself, live in fear every time the sirens wail, announcing the approach of dangerous weather conditions. Our mobile homes simply don't offer the protection needed during a tornado. That's why there's a critical need for storm shelters at the end of every other cul-de-sac in our community.

Currently, our quest for safety depends on the approval of the city of Albion. It's crucial that city officials recognize the dire need for these shelters. They would not only provide immediate safety during extreme weather but also offer peace of mind all year round.

Implementing storm shelters is a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of Albion's Wildflower Community. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on average, there are over 1,000 tornadoes in the United States each year, causing extensive damage and posing significant risks to life, especially to those in mobile homes. A storm shelter reduces the risk of injury and fatalities during such events by up to 70%, and we must be prepared before the next emergency strikes.

Support from city officials is not just about authorizing physical structures; it’s about affirming that the lives and safety of Albion's residents are valued and protected. The practical solution offered—the installation of storm shelters—demonstrates foresight and a deep concern for community welfare.

Let’s rally together to urge the city of Albion to approve the much-needed storm shelters for the Wildflower Community. Let’s make our neighborhood a safer place to live, and by doing so, potentially save lives when disaster strikes again. Please sign this petition to show your support and make an impactful change.
