Allow ssi recipients to marry without losing benefits

The Issue

My name is [daniellehammers, and I am one of the millions who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to make ends meet. Like many others, I should have the freedom to marry the person I love without the fear of losing essential financial support. Currently, the rules surrounding SSI are outdated and force individuals into a position where they must choose between love and financial stability.

Under current regulations, if someone receiving SSI decides to marry, their benefits are often reduced or even eliminated. This is because the government considers the spouse's income and resources, which may exceed the allowed limits. For those of us living on SSI, these regulations are not just faceless numbers—they are real barriers that prevent people from living full, happy lives.

In 2020, approximately 8 million people were on SSI, many of whom may find themselves battling the same unjust laws that threaten their basic rights to marry without financial repercussions. It is high time that our laws reflect the principles of equality and fairness.

The reality is that love doesn't look at income; it crosses boundaries and defies stereotypes. We are punishing those who need love and support the most by imposing an unnecessarily harsh choice between life partners and financial security. Love and marriage should not be privileges only afforded to those without financial constraints.

I am calling on legislators to reform SSI regulations to allow recipients the freedom to marry without penalty. We need laws that reflect our society’s values, where everyone has the opportunity to build the life they envision with their loved ones without risking economic ruin. This change not only supports individual rights but also strengthens our communities by supporting stable, loving partnerships, regardless of financial situations.

Our laws should empower us, not hold us back. Please stand with me in this effort to update SSI regulations for the betterment of individuals who rely on them. Let's make love and marriage accessible to all, regardless of financial standing.

Please sign this petition to demand change in SSI marriage penalties and allow love to flourish free from fear.

Also with people living on limited income in the same household and being able to have the same amount of money both recieving government checks is hard way to live without being able to be married and not keep both full checks because it's not much to begin with to make ends meet. So please let this go through and make this change for people like me and other like me to be able to live a honest life. Even though it's still hard and still trying to keep our heads above water. But most of all we are doing what is right in God's eyes and abiding by the law.
