Allow squishy toys in school regulations

The Issue

I am writing this petition on behalf of my friends who struggle with anxiety. In our school, like many others, squishy toys have been banned from classrooms. This ban is unfortunate because for students like my friends, squishies are more than just toys— they are essential tools for managing stress and anxiety. Despite the peaceful nature and the benefits squishies bring to many of our peers, the school administration remains firm in their stance to keep these helpful items out of the classroom.

Squishy toys, often referred to simply as "squishies," provide a quiet and unobtrusive way for students to keep their hands busy. This can be particularly beneficial for those with anxiety, ADD, or sensory needs, as research shows that engaging in a tactile activity can significantly enhance focus and reduce anxiety levels. Reports have highlighted that in classrooms where quiet fidget toys are allowed, students are better able to concentrate and absorb information. Furthermore, studies have indicated that tactile activities help mitigate stress and improve emotional regulation among students.

Schools are always seeking new methods to enhance students' learning experiences and improve their overall well-being. Allowing squishies represents an opportunity to support these goals. Since they are silent and do not disrupt the educational environment, squishies can seamlessly integrate into classroom settings. We propose that educators establish clear guidelines on the responsible use of squishies—such as when they can be used and ensuring they remain quiet during lessons. This compromise ensures that students who benefit from having squishies can use them without hindering the educational process of others.

We urge the school board to reconsider their stance on squishy toys and allow them back into schools, recognizing their role as valuable tools for promoting concentration, calmness, and focus. By signing this petition, you will help advocate for a more inclusive environment where every student is supported in achieving their highest potential.
