Allow sophomores to do independent study PE

Allow sophomores to do independent study PE
The Issue
Many of my friends are exceptionally talented athletes who have devoted countless hours to mastering their sports. They compete at state, regional, and even national levels, showcasing incredible dedication and skill. Despite their passion and accomplishments, they are forced to endure a second year of standard physical education (PE) because their chosen sports are either not CIF recognized or not offered by our school. This unnecessary requirement places an additional and unwarranted strain on their bodies, taking time away from valuable training and risking unnecessary injuries. These athletes deserve the opportunity to focus on their sports without the burden of an extra year of PE that doesn’t align with their professional goals or enhance their skills. Allowing sophomores to engage in Independent Study PE (ISPE) would address this issue by providing a flexible option that acknowledges their dedication and expertise. Under ISPE, students would have the ability to continue their rigorous training schedules while meeting educational requirements in a manner that respects their commitment to their sports. The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) has the power to implement this change. By allowing sophomores to participate in ISPE, LVJUSD would demonstrate support for its student-athletes, recognizing their exceptional talent and dedication. This initiative would not only benefit the athletes but also uphold the school's commitment to nurturing individual talents and honoring student achievements. Many school districts across California have already adopted ISPE options for students whose sports commitments demand flexibility, setting a precedent that LVJUSD can follow. We should seize the opportunity to make a positive change that aligns our district with the supportive standards set by our peers. Join us in urging the LVJUSD school district to support our athletes by adopting Independent Study PE for sophomore students. Sign this petition to voice your support for a policy change that honors athletic dedication and fosters educational success.
