Allow Small Backpacks and Drawstring Bags in School District 303, Illinois Middle Schools

The Issue

As someone who suffers from anxiety and tendencies towards perfection, my school life is constantly disrupted by the policy that disallows small bags and backpacks in School District 303, Illinois. Every passing period becomes a race against time as I rush to my locker and scramble to gather the correct supplies for the next class. This often leads to forgotten items and inevitable return trips to my locker, causing inconvenience for me, my classmates, and my teachers.

Small drawstring bags, sling bags, and clear backpacks would provide a solution for students like me. They offer an excellent way to remain organized, lessen the likelihood of forgetting essential items, and help avoid the rush that can exacerbate anxiety. However, our current school policy does not permit these.

The argument against these smaller bags and backpacks, as I understand it, is to prevent hallway crowding and reduce the potential for tripping in the classroom aisles. However, this ignores the benefits that these items bring to many students. It is possible to work out rules that allow for their use without causing undue disruption.

The benefits of allowing these bags largely outweigh the concerns against them; a study from the National Education Association suggested that easing backpack weight by allowing smaller, more manageable carry options can even help improve student health and well-being, though small backpacks and drawstrings should be small enough to still be fit for the space.

It's time we reconsider this policy for the good of the students in School District 303, Illinois. I ask you to sign this petition to help students like me maintain organization, lessen school-related anxiety, and create a more conducive learning environment.
