Allow Single Women Equitable Access to Fertility Treatment on the NHS

The Issue

I am a single, 34-year-old queer woman and time is not a luxury I can afford. I am someone who knows and has known that my life is meant for being a parent. My goal is full with obstacles, being queer, and very much single. I have always found it really hard to understand how straight couples or people can conceive whenever and whereever they want without conception being something that they intend on. But they can get free Ivf just by having regular sex. and everyone else has to spend money that just isnt available toanyone who is on less than 40K a year.

I am a woman who is destined to be a mum, and my life is nothing without it. I can offer more than a lot in terms of being a parent and I cant afford upwards of 10k to be one. this is not equal.

Straight couples merely have to try to conceive for a year to qualify for in vitro fertilization (IVF) covered by the NHS. In stark contrast, single women and lesbian couples face a harsh reality – we are mandated to expend approximately 3,000 pounds for 12 private IVF cycles before we qualify for the NHS programme. This manifestly unjust policy brings about unduly financial stress on top of an already emotionally charged process.

The existing disparity in accessing fertility treatments exposes a discriminatory loophole in our healthcare system. According to the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority, about 13,500 IVF cycles were performed for patients in same-sex relationships or for single women in the UK in 2018, so the issue at hand is far from trivial (HFEA, 2020). Furthermore, as noted by the NICE guidelines, those undergoing fertility treatments should have equal access regardless of their sexual orientation (NICE, 2013).

We urge the NHS to adopt a more inclusive policy that ensures equal access to these vital treatments. This doesn't concern only single women and lesbian couples but anyone who believes in equal rights and fairness in our healthcare system.

Join me in my fight for equality. Sign the petition to demand the NHS to revisit its policy on fertility treatments for single women and lesbian couples, ensuring they hold the same rights as heterosexual couples to create a family. Sign this petition and let our collective voices be heard.
