Allow Sick Students to Miss School Without Penalty

The Issue

As a concerned student at Independence High School in Charlotte, NC 28227, I am starting this petition to address an issue that affects countless students in our community. It is unfair and unjust that students are penalized for being absent due to illness. This policy not only puts our health at risk but also hinders our academic progress.

Personal Story:
I and my peers remember the times when we fell ill during the school year. Despite having a high fever and feeling extremely weak, I forced myself to attend classes because of the fear of facing consequences for missing school. Not only was it physically demanding, but it also affected my ability to concentrate and participate effectively in class discussions.

It is disheartening that instead of receiving support and understanding during such times, sick students like me are subjected to additional stress caused by strict attendance policies. This not only compromises our well-being but also creates an environment where attending school becomes more important than taking care of ourselves.

Facts and Statistics:
1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), absenteeism due to illness contributes significantly to the spread of infectious diseases within schools.
2. A study conducted by Harvard University found that punitive attendance policies can lead to increased stress levels among students, negatively impacting their mental health.
3. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping sick children home from school until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication.

Petition Objective:
We urge Independence High School administration and district officials in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to implement a more compassionate policy regarding student absences due to illness.

Proposed Changes:
1. Allow students who are genuinely sick with contagious illnesses or severe symptoms (such as high fever) one excused absence per semester without any penalties.
2. Provide clear guidelines on what constitutes a valid reason for absence due to illness, ensuring that students are not unfairly penalized.
3. Encourage teachers to provide missed assignments and class materials to sick students upon their return, allowing them a fair chance to catch up on missed work.

By signing this petition, we stand together as concerned students, parents, and community members who believe in the importance of prioritizing student health and well-being. Let us create an environment where sick students can take the necessary time off without fearing academic repercussions.

Together, let's advocate for a more compassionate attendance policy at Independence High School and set an example for other schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district. Our voices matter, and our health should never be compromised for the sake of attendance records.

Thank you for your support in making this change happen!
