Allow Senior Quotes in the 2026 El Capitan Yearbook

Allow Senior Quotes in the 2026 El Capitan Yearbook
The Issue
El Capitan High School principal, Carrie Gaeir has decided to remove senior quotes in the 2025-2026 yearbook. These quotes have been a tradition in yearbooks for decades and the students of our school have already chosen and submitted their quotes to our yearbook staff.
Her claim is that they are trying to “ensure the yearbook remains a timeless and inclusive reflection of our entire school community” and to “protect student legacy” her reasoning being that commonly used “slang” could be inappropriate, harmful, or have a deeper meaning.
Yearbooks are not supposed to be timeless, they are unique collections of memories formed by the students of the school, each year having different styles, images, captions and cohorts of students. The yearbooks of today and yearbooks of the past both used “slang”, and although it may be different words, it’s all “slang” nonetheless.
We acknowledge that our submissions will be reviewed and ultimately denied if deemed inappropriate. But we wish to keep the ability to have personalized senior quotes in the yearbook.
