The Issue

Here at RLAA, students face a unique challenge. Every day, from 8 AM to 4 PM, we are required to lock our phones in Yonder pouches, cutting off our access even during free periods, lunchtime, or if our classes end early. This blanket policy means we are unable to reach out to our family in emergencies, manage personal tasks, or even keep in touch with parents and friends outside the campus. As boarding students, our phones are often the only tool we have to stay connected with the outside world.

The Yonder policy was originally implemented to minimize distractions and maintain focus during school hours. However, it's important to recognize that it inadvertently limits our independence and ability to handle technology responsibly. As high school students, we should be trusted to manage our own time and communication, learning the valuable lessons of responsibility and self-control in a tech-centric world.

We believe that there is a middle ground that respects both the institution's goals and the students' needs. Instead of a complete ban, we propose tailored restrictions that allow responsible phone usage during non-instructional times like lunch breaks and after classes. This way, students who need to make a quick call to their parents or check important notifications are not unduly hindered.

By adjusting the policy, RLAA can foster a more balanced educational environment where students are encouraged to exercise good judgment and learn essential life skills. We urge the administration to reconsider the current restrictions and implement a more flexible policy that aligns with today's technological realities.

Please sign this petition to support a more realistic and balanced approach to phone usage at RLAA, ensuring that students are not left in digital isolation without cause.
