The Issue

Millions of Americans face challenges in reintegrating into society after serving their time for past mistakes. Unfortunately, in Missouri, certain felons remain barred from working in fields like healthcare, senior services, and education, even after demonstrating personal growth and reform. This is not only an injustice but a severe limitation on their ability to improve their lives.

My name is megan and I've experienced firsthand the struggles that come with being a reformed felon trying to re-enter the workforce. Despite working hard to turn my life around and prove that people can change, I've repeatedly faced rejection from jobs simply because of my past. It's disheartening to realize that while one can be a felon and still run for president, countless reformed individuals remain stigmatized, their talents and dedication overlooked.

Our state policies need to embrace the potential of all its citizens. Excluding reformed felons from state jobs does a disservice not only to them but to society at large. By denying these individuals meaningful employment, we are not only hindering their personal growth but possibly leading them back to a path of crime due to lack of opportunities.

Statistics indicate that gainful employment significantly reduces recidivism rates among previously incarcerated individuals. By reforming our policies to allow certain reformed felons to apply for state jobs, we can harness their potential, benefiting both the individuals and the communities in which they reside.

Some might express concerns about safety or integrity, especially in sensitive sectors like education or healthcare. We can address these concerns with thorough interviews, and probationary employment periods. Whatever the solution, it must be fair, just, and in line with the belief that people can change.

I urge the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations to take action and propose legislative changes that can help reintegrate reformed felons into the workforce effectively. Let us pave the way for a more inclusive workforce while also protecting our communities.

Let's show that Missouri values change, forgiveness, and equal opportunity. Join me in calling for these reforms. Sign this petition to help reformed individuals have a brighter future.
