Allow Rabbits to Fly In-Cabin on Alaska Airlines

Allow Rabbits to Fly In-Cabin on Alaska Airlines
The Issue
As the executive director at Better Bunny, the only 501(c)3 nonprofit rabbit rescue in Hawaii, I've witnessed firsthand the struggles that rabbit owners face when trying to travel with their beloved pets. Rabbits, being prey animals, require a particular kind of environment to ensure their safety and well-being. Unfortunately, Alaska Airlines, a popular choice for many pet owners due to their accommodating pet policies, recently changed their rules, preventing rabbits from flying in-cabin. This decision could have dire consequences for both rabbits and their owners.
Rabbits are extremely sensitive creatures that thrive in environments where they feel secure. Transporting them in the cargo hold, away from the watchful eyes of their owners, subjects them to unnecessary stress which could lead to serious health complications, even death. It's not just a matter of convenience; it's a matter of survival.
The new policy by Alaska Airlines leaves rabbit owners with limited options. Most airlines do not allow rabbits in the cabin, diminishing the accessibility of domestic travel for rabbit owners and significantly increasing the difficulty of relocating. In Hawaii, where domestic travel often involves flying, this policy could lead to an increase in rabbit surrenders at rescues like Better Bunny. Many owners, unable to move with their beloved pets, might feel forced into the heart-wrenching decision of surrendering them to shelters, which are already overburdened.
Rabbits being turned away from in-cabin flights not only affects these gentle animals and their owners but could also lead to greater strain on animal shelters. Pet-friendly travel policies encourage responsible pet ownership, ensuring that pets stay with their families and don't end up in shelters.
Alaska Airlines must reconsider their policy. By allowing rabbits to travel in-cabin, they can play a crucial role in promoting humane treatment of these sensitive animals and supporting their owners. This policy will ensure that rabbits are supervised, safe, and away from the dangers posed by traveling in the cargo hold. Additionally, it will help reduce the number of rabbits being surrendered to shelters, alleviating some of the pressure on already crowded rescue facilities.
Please join us in urging Alaska Airlines to rethink their decision and permit rabbits to fly in-cabin. Your signature could be the voice of countless rabbits who deserve safe travel, and countless owners who want to keep their family together. Sign the petition to make a difference now.
