Allow Queer Film to be screened at Mount Lilydale Mercy College

The Issue

Hello everyone.

My name is Tayler Allwood and I am a Year 12 Media student at Mount Lilydale Mercy College. A Catholic Private School located in Melbourne's outer East.

As part of my School Assessed Task (SAT) for the subject, students are required to create a media product. For my school, the assessment is to create a short film. I have been working on my short film since October last year and I am now nearing the final weeks of post-production for the film.

The Film is called Loving Graham and it's a coming-of-age film about a teenage girl exploring the fears, joys, and dynamic journey of her identity. Specifically, coming to terms with her sexuality. The film finishes with a kiss shared between the main character and her female love interest.

Because my film 'goes against the teachings of the catholic church, Mount Lilydale Mercy College has made the decision not to screen my film in its entirety at our Visual Arts Exhibition, Mock Oscars Awards Night, being uploaded to the school's visual arts website, or for the film to have any affiliation with the college.

If enough signatures are gathered for this petition, it would then be delivered to senior-level staff members and hopefully, the school will revoke its current decision and will screen my film that I have worked incredibly hard on for the past 8-10 months.

All I want out of this is for my film to be shown alongside the work of my classmates. I am the only one in the class being excluded and all I seek is inclusion and equality.

Dear signers, Thank you for signing Tayler’s petition. The world is ever changing, and so is our society. We are made up of a hugely diverse population which includes a vibrant LGBTIQA+ community. At a time when LGBTIQA+ youth have been and continue to be used as political footballs, vilified, demonised, they are many times more at risk than any other youth cohort in our country. It is vitally important that they are accepted for who they are, just like any other person and that their rights to participate fully in our education system are respected and upheld. Tayler’s work is an important piece, helping break down stigma and bigotry, and should be embraced and celebrated. Held up as an example of what a civilised society looks like. I say to all our LGBTIQA+ youth: You are seen, you are respected, you are loved.    Andy Meddick MLC.
