Allow Pollinator-Friendly Lawns in Oklahoma City

The Issue

I have a bachelor's in Plant Biology from the University of Oklahoma and want to protect these keystone pollinator species that keep food on our plate. In protecting these species, habitat connectivity is more important than habitat size, and having more lawns that are able to feed and home these species is vital to our survival on Earth. Many of these host plant species grow over the legal limit by our law. Also, there is no working definition of what a weed is, and that is extremely problematic. Especially considering the higher the diversity of plant life in your yard the more diversity of pollinators it can support. We need protection of our native species that make this land so grand. One example of a more feasible definition of a weed would be species that are invasive to your area.

Pollinators like bees and butterflies are essential for the reproduction of about 75% of flowering plants and nearly 75% of crops worldwide (source: FAO). By allowing lawns to be pollinator-friendly, we can help maintain biodiversity, support local ecosystems, and ensure food security for future generations.

Sign this petition to urge Oklahoma City officials to revise lawn regulations to allow for pollinator-friendly practices!
