Allow piercings and address real issues at Trinity Catholic College Lismore
The issue
Trinity Catholic College Lismore prides itself on being a culturally inclusive institution, yet it fails to create a truly supportive environment for both students and staff. The focus on strict uniform policies, such as the prohibition of facial piercings, overshadows the more pressing concerns that genuinely affect the wellbeing of the school community.
Many students and teachers alike have left Trinity because of the unaddressed toxic atmosphere permeating both the classroom and the staffroom. While teachers enforce appearance-based rules with alacrity, the more significant issues, like ensuring a supportive environment, seem to be swept under the carpet. The emphasis seems to have shifted to nitpicking over piercings, while broader problems persist — leaving many to wonder why staff turnover is so high and why students feel unsupported. They’ll use this as an example to make an assembly, to show that they are an inclusive school but not change a small rule that can help with expression.
Additionally, despite being branded a "culturally diverse" institution, the college has seemingly put minimal effort into genuinely embracing and celebrating cultural diversity. The acknowledgement of Indigenous people is crucial, yet real inclusion means taking concrete actions to include and celebrate all races and cultures present in the school community.
Furthermore, the financial management at Trinity raises questions. Parents are burdened with constant fee hikes, yet the facilities remain underfunded. Basic necessities such as tissue boxes suffer from a lack of funding, while canteen prices raise higher like the questions of where the school fees are actually going. This financial mismanagement only adds to the dissatisfaction and discomfort among students and staff, revealing a disconnect between the school’s priorities and the needs of its community.
We urge Trinity Catholic College to genuinely reconsider its priorities and implement changes that reflect the interests and wellbeing of both students and staff. This includes allowing personal expressions like piercings, taking substantial steps toward true cultural inclusion, and addressing the critical issues that create a toxic atmosphere. Let’s work together for a practical and welcoming educational environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
We need your support to bring about this change. Sign this petition and let’s call on Trinity Catholic College to address the real issues and make a meaningful difference in our educational community.
