Allow phone use during school breakfast and lunch
The Issue
Throughout my school years, making friends has been an uphill battle. The fear of judgment and cruelty from peers due to the way I speak or how I dress has often left me isolated, unable to engage with those around me. It's a familiar story for many of us—students who happen to be introverted or have conditions like anxiety that make socializing difficult. In these circumstances, having access to our phones during breakfast and lunch becomes more than just a convenience; it becomes our lifeline.
Phones are often perceived as distractions in educational settings, but for those of us who struggle to connect in person, they provide much-needed social support. Our phones allow us to maintain vital connections with online friends who accept us for who we are. They offer a sanctuary where we can freely express ourselves without the fear of ridicule, fostering a sense of belonging that is hard to find within the walls of school.
There is compelling evidence that social interactions through digital platforms can alleviate feelings of loneliness and increase emotional wellbeing. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 73% of teens feel that social media is a place where they can show their support for each other during tough times. Another study highlighted that online friendships can offer significant emotional support and can sometimes be as valuable as offline connections.
Given this, I urge school administrations to reconsider blanket bans on phone use during breakfast and lunch periods, especially in schools that previously allowed this practice. Instead of completely restricting phone usage, schools could establish clear guidelines and designate specific areas or times where phone use is appropriate. This approach would strike a balance between maintaining educational focus and supporting students' emotional and social needs.
Sign this petition to bring about a positive change that values the emotional wellbeing of students. Let's ask our school leaders to understand the importance of connectivity for introverted students or those experiencing social anxiety. Together, we can make school a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
