The Issue

I have a son who passed away 18 years ago. Visiting his grave and maintaining it has always been a way for me to feel close to him. For years, I decorated his grave and took care of it myself. However, about four years ago, I noticed that the mowers were damaging the items I lovingly placed there. I reached out to the cemetery superintendent, and they permitted me to maintain my son's grave personally. This allowed me to visit every week, mow, weed eat, and put up a small fence around his precious resting place that I purchased with my own money. I was not only maintaining the area within the fence but also about a foot outside of it. This was my way of honoring my son and ensuring his grave was always beautiful and respected.

However, recently, a decision has been made that prevents me from continuing this practice. This has been devastating for me. If I've purchased a burial lot, shouldn't I have the freedom to decorate and care for it in a way that brings peace to my heart without causing harm to anyone else? Having the autonomy to personalize the resting place of our loved ones is essential for many of us who visit regularly as a means of connection, remembrance, and healing.

Cemeteries should accommodate personal expressions of grief and remembrance, provided they don't interfere with the maintenance or the aesthetics of the cemetery as a whole. A balance can be achieved where decoration rules ensure safety and respect for others, allowing us room for personal touches that mean the world to families.

I am calling on cemetery authorities to reconsider these restrictive policies. Families should be given the option to maintain and decorate their loved one's resting places as long as it doesn't harm or inconvenience others or interfere with the cemetery’s upkeep. Such an allowance acknowledges the emotional and spiritual aspects of grief care and honors our autonomy as plot owners.

Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to allow grieving families the right to lovingly maintain and decorate the cemetery lots of their loved ones with personal touches that express their love and loss.
