The Issue

I've been attending school in Texas since I began my education journey, and up until now, the use of personal computers has never been an issue. Our state recently implemented a ban on personal devices, forcing us to use school-issued computers that are not only restrictive but also small and often inadequate for those of us with specific needs. I suffer from bad eyesight, and the school-provided mini laptops make it difficult, sometimes even impossible, for me to read and complete my assignments.

This situation is not just an inconvenience; it puts me and countless others at a significant disadvantage. We are deprived of the freedom to access the internet beyond the limited scope permitted by these restrictive devices and forced into using technology that is not suitable for everyone. Such a restriction not only hampers learning but can also be a source of misinformation and safety concerns, leaving students potentially uninformed about critical information available online.

Texas schools need to recognize that personal computers can be a highly effective educational tool when used responsibly. They provide students with the necessary resources and flexibility to perform better academically, and for people like me, who have specific accessibility needs, they are vital. The implementation of a policy allowing personal computers in high schools, while maintaining academic integrity and focus, is crucial.

We propose that Texas revise this policy to allow personal computers as a separate entity from the current device ban. By doing so, it will ensure that all students, irrespective of their needs, have equal access to technology that will better assist them in their educational endeavors.

Please join us in urging Texas lawmakers and school boards to reconsider this ban and make a positive change for the future of our students. Sign this petition to support equal access to technology for all Texas high school students.
