Allow people with special needs to retain benefits abroad

Allow people with special needs to retain benefits abroad
The Issue
Many individuals with special needs rely on government benefits to maintain their quality of life. These benefits often encompass essential supports including financial assistance, healthcare coverage, and access to critical services. However, the moment they travel or reside abroad even temporarily, these crucial benefits are suspended or discontinued, depriving individuals of the stability and resources they need.
This policy oversight has severe repercussions. Whether it's for visiting family, studying, working in another country, or seeking specialized medical treatment unavailable at home, being stripped of benefits can put individuals with special needs in precarious situations. It leaves them vulnerable, potentially without necessary medication, access to medical professionals, or the financial means to support themselves, exacerbating an already challenging situation.
As a man with Autism myself, I speak on their behalf to put an end to this outdated policy and restore financial security to special needs people when they're traveling overseas.
It's vital to recognize that the need for support doesn't vanish at the border. An inclusive society should ensure that wherever an individual with special needs finds themselves, their rights and benefits follow. Simple policy adjustments could make this a reality. For instance, benefits can be tethered to citizenship rather than location, allowing individuals to retain access during travel or temporary stays abroad.
Implementing reciprocal agreements with other countries to honour and provide equivalent services can further ease transitions for those travelling or residing overseas. With globalization, people's lives and work increasingly extend beyond their home country's borders, and our policies should reflect these changes.
Join us in urging policymakers to revise current benefit regulations, and allow people with special needs the freedom and security to explore and reside overseas without fear of losing their essential support. Sign this petition to make a difference today.
