Allow Pedal Assist E-Bikes on Pismo Preserve

Allow Pedal Assist E-Bikes on Pismo Preserve
The Issue
As someone who experiences asthma exacerbations, I understand the frustration of being unable to access certain areas without assistance. Pismo Preserve, located in beautiful Pismo Beach, California, offers breathtaking trails and scenery that are unfortunately out of reach for some of us who rely on pedal assist e-bikes. Current restrictions on Class One pedal assist e-bikes prevent many, including those with physical challenges, from enjoying these natural wonders. It is critical to re-evaluate and change these rules to prevent injustice and provide equal access to all.
Class One pedal assist e-bikes are designed to help those who need a little extra assistance while cycling. They are not motorized vehicles like their counterparts but simply provide gentle support, making outdoor spaces much more accessible for people with disabilities or chronic conditions, like asthma. By disallowing these bikes, Pismo Preserve inadvertently excludes those who could benefit most from the picturesque and healthful environment of its trails.
Statistics show that a significant portion of the population lives with some form of disability. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in four U.S. adults has a disability that affects major life activities. Many people rely on adaptive devices like e-bikes to maintain their health and well-being, excessively restricting their usage on trails limits opportunities for physical activities, which are vital for mental and physical health, and contradicts the ethos of inclusive, outdoor recreation.
Furthermore, safety concerns regarding trail usage of pedal assist e-bikes are often exaggerated. These bikes are equipped with technology that limits speed and ensures that riders maintain control just as if they were on a traditional bicycle. Implementing a trial period for Class One e-bikes on the trails and engaging in ongoing evaluation can mitigate concerns and gather data to guide future policy.
The time is now to unite as a community of trail enthusiasts and conservationists to advocate for change. By supporting the inclusion of pedal assist e-bikes at Pismo Preserve, we recognize the importance of inclusivity, equity, and the ability for everyone to enjoy outdoor recreational areas—regardless of physical ability.
Let's come together to ask the Pismo Beach officials for this much-needed rule revision. Sign the petition to support equal access and make Pismo Preserve a more welcoming place for everyone.
