The issue

Medical professionals often hailed transvaginal mesh as a breakthrough treatment for pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, but for thousands of women like me, it became a source of enduring pain and discomfort. I received a mesh implant that was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, but its aftermath has left me battling chronic pain, often beyond the relief that standard medications can provide.

For a time, medicinal cannabis provided me with the much-needed relief. It helped me manage my pain effectively, allowing me to function and sleep. Unfortunately, my personal use was interrupted under tragic circumstances. My husband, a devoted firefighter for 38 years, who suffered from severe PTSD and was later diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, could no longer drive. It fell to me to take the wheel. He is now deceased but now, even this option is snatched away because if I resume medicinal cannabis, I face losing my driver's license.

Living in constant pain, finding it difficult to undertake daily tasks, and being unable to drive puts me in a distressing situation. I ask for your support in petitioning the Australian government to review and amend the current regulations surrounding medicinal cannabis use. Specifically, it's crucial to allow patients like me, who need their medication to maintain a semblance of normal life, to drive legally and safely without fear of losing our driving privileges.

A compassionate adjustment is necessary. By thoroughly evaluating patients and monitoring their capabilities, it is possible to ensure road safety without compromising the wellbeing of patients reliant on medicinal cannabis. Many recommendations suggest that the zero-tolerance laws concerning cannabis need re-evaluation. Enabling those who truly depend on medicinal cannabis as a critical part of their healthcare regimen to continue living functional, autonomous lives must become a priority.

The impact of not being able to drive extends beyond mere convenience—it affects employment, family obligations, and mental health. Medicinal cannabis patients need fair consideration, and their right to choose effective treatment without penalizing their independence or freedom should be upheld. Please sign the petition to advocate for these crucial legislative changes, enabling all medicinal cannabis patients to live healthier, fuller lives without fear of losing their licenses.
