The Issue

Recently, my wife and I endured one of the most painful moments of our lives. At six weeks pregnant, she was informed that we had lost our baby. However, the devastating part was that she received this heartbreaking news completely alone. I was not allowed in the room with her during her miscarriage. It was only at her request that I was finally allowed to see her, completely unaware of what had happened. In her grief-stricken state, she had to break the tragic news to me herself, delivering the words through floods of tears. This situation lacked compassion and was unacceptable.

This experience is not unique to us. Many couples face similar situations where hospital policies prevent partners from being present during such a critical and sensitive time. This outdated approach not only adds to the emotional burden on the grieving mother but also alienates and isolates partners who are equally invested in the pregnancy. A miscarriage is a profound loss for both parents, and the lack of support during this time is inhumane.

According to the Miscarriage Association, it is estimated that one in four pregnancies ends in loss during pregnancy or birth. These statistics highlight the vast number of individuals impacted by such policies. In these painful moments, emotional support from loved ones is essential for kindling healing and processing grief.

Hospitals and medical institutions have the power to change this distressing practice. By updating their policies to allow partners to be present during a miscarriage, they can offer a more compassionate and supportive environment to bereaved families. This change would recognize the role of partners as integral support systems and acknowledge the shared grief in such circumstances.

We urge medical institutions to review and revise their visitation policies concerning miscarriage. Let us support families when they need it the most and give them the dignity and compassion they deserve during an unimaginable loss.

Please sign this petition to help us push for change and ensure that no family has to go through such sorrow alone again.
