Allow Parents to Walk Across the Graduation Stage with Their Children

Allow Parents to Walk Across the Graduation Stage with Their Children

The Issue

I am a parent, like many of you, who has faced numerous challenges in my life. But none of these obstacles were as significant as raising my son while pursuing my education. He is the most important thing to me and he has been by my side throughout this journey. We have persevered together, and now that graduation day is approaching, I want him to share in this momentous occasion.

However, my principal does not allow parents to walk across the stage with their children during graduation ceremonies. This policy overlooks the fact that for some students - especially those who are also parents - their academic journey is not just an individual achievement but a family accomplishment.

According to a study by Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR), 26% of all undergraduate students in US are raising children while attending school. These student-parents face unique challenges and often juggle multiple responsibilities including work, childcare and studies.

We believe it's time for our institution in Spokane, WA to recognize these efforts and allow parents like myself to walk across the stage with our children on graduation day. It would be a powerful symbol of recognition for student-parents' hard work and dedication.

Please sign this petition if you believe in celebrating academic achievements as family accomplishments too!
