Allow Off-Lead Dogs in Designated Areas in Weston-super-Mare

Allow Off-Lead Dogs in Designated Areas in Weston-super-Mare
The Issue
I have a Border Collie who is not just my companion but my assistant dog. He requires a significant amount of exercise due to his breed's high energy levels. However, as a disabled individual, I am unable to take him long distances, which makes local recreational areas our only option for his exercise needs. Unfortunately, I've been repeatedly approached by street wardens in Weston-super-Mare for allowing my dog to be off-lead while playing ball, an activity that is fundamental for his and my well-being.
Playing ball with your dog is not just a recreational activity; for many of us, it's a vital part of our daily lives, promoting health and happiness for both pets and owners. In many locations, especially in urban environments like ours, having the freedom for our dogs to enjoy moments off-lead is essential for their physical and mental health.
The current restrictions on allowing dogs off-lead in Weston-super-Mare prevent us from utilizing our parks fully. Designating specific areas where dogs can safely enjoy off-lead time would alleviate these concerns, benefiting not only disabled individuals with assistance dogs but also other dog owners who are unable to provide large backyard spaces or long walks due to personal constraints.
Other towns and cities have successfully implemented designated off-lead areas within parks, resulting in happier, healthier dogs, and more satisfied communities. With a similar approach, Weston-super-Mare can offer a more inclusive environment for its residents and their furry companions.
Local governments can achieve this by clearly marking designated off-lead zones in our existing parks, ensuring they are safe and suitable for both dogs and people. This initiative would involve working collaboratively with dog owners, park managers, and local authorities to create a shared space that respects everyone’s needs.
Please join me in urging the local council of Weston-super-Mare to create designated off-lead areas in our parks, allowing those like myself the opportunity to give our dogs the exercise they need without the fear of reprimand. Sign this petition to make a positive change for our community.
