Allow Nuketown Gelball field to operate again
The issue
For nearly a decade, our beloved Nuketown Gelball field at the South Coast Restoration Society (SCRS) in Pimpama has been more than just a recreational facility; it has been a cornerstone of our community. We have embraced individuals from all walks of life, offering a welcoming environment for people with disabilities, veterans, local community groups, families, and anyone who cherishes friendly competition and camaraderie.
However, this vibrant hub that has been instrumental in building bonds and providing a safe, inclusive space for therapeutic and recreational activities is now facing a sudden crisis. The Gold Coast City Council has stripped us of the ability to continue these efforts by informing SCRS that we're no longer permitted to use the grounds, effectively shutting us down. This abrupt decision overlooks the countless positive impacts our field has had on the community and could result in the loss of a vital support network for many individuals.
Gelball isn’t just a sport for us; it is a lifeline, a place for healing, connection, and community building. With its closure, many of our members, especially those dealing with disabilities and veteran-related mental health issues, lose access to the physical and mental health benefits our activities provide. The Gelball community has become a therapeutic and inclusive refuge where friendships are formed and personal growth is encouraged in a supportive setting.
We understand the necessity for regulations and community planning, but we believe that Gelball aligns with those values and should be reconsidered as a valued addition to the local environment. Additionally, SCRS and the Gelball organisers are open to collaborating with the council to meet all necessary safety and environmental standards, ensuring that operations are conducted in a sustainable and community-conscious manner.
We are calling on the Gold Coast City Council to reverse their decision and permit the Nuketown Gelball field to continue operating at SCRS. By signing this petition, you are supporting the continuation of a project that is integral to the wellbeing and unity of our local community. Please help us keep our supportive and dynamic space alive by adding your voice today.
