Allow ncga wake surf vests for low-speed towing

Allow ncga wake surf vests for low-speed towing
The Issue
Having spent my entire life wake surfing, I know firsthand the safety and comfort that modern wake surf impact vests provide. They have become an integral part of the wake surfing community, offering both protection and freedom of movement.
Currently, there is a law that prohibits wearing a non-coast guard approved (NCGA) vest while being towed behind a boat. However, when towing is done at low speeds—specifically under 12 miles an hour—these vests are perfectly adequate for ensuring the safety of the surfer. These impact vests are specifically designed to be used in the sporting context of wake surfing, where the risk at such low speeds is minimal.
A study published by Wakeboarding Magazine highlights that the increased buoyancy of coast guard approved vests can actually hinder a surfer's performance, increasing the risk of discomfort and injury. Furthermore, similar regulations are being re-evaluated in other states due to their recognition of the specialized nature of wake surfing gear, urging a more accommodating stance for the sport.
I urge lawmakers to reconsider and amend the existing regulations to allow the use of NCGA modern wake surf impact vests for adults (16+) when being towed at speeds under 12 miles an hour. This change will not only reflect the needs and safety of the wake surfing community but also ensure that participants can continue to enjoy the sport safely and comfortably.
Please sign this petition to support this change and help bring about a sensible adaptation to the law, enabling all wake surfers to opt for the most appropriate safety gear for their sport.
