Allow my friend to keep her beloved cane corso, Chico

The Issue

It is with a heavy heart that I write this petition to protect the life of Chico, my friend's one-year-old Cane Corso, a gentle and loving member of her family. Just a few days ago, she received a distressing notice from our city authorities stating that Chico must be removed, or they would take drastic action and euthanize him, simply because some neighbors have expressed fear due to his breed.

This situation is deeply troubling as Chico is not just a pet; he is a beloved family member who has brought joy and companionship to her life. Chico has not harmed anyone, and he is always secure within their side yard, protected by a sturdy gate, away from public interaction. The perception that he is a threat is unfounded and unfairly biased against his breed.

Cane Corsos have a reputation for being protective, yet that does not mean they are inherently dangerous. Numerous studies have shown that dog behavior is primarily influenced by how they are raised and trained, rather than their breed. In fact, the American Temperament Test Society shows that Cane Corsos have a passing rate of 88.1% on temperament tests, demonstrating a stable, friendly nature.

We propose that rather than penalizing this family and their innocent dog, the city should evaluate Chico's behavior through a properly conducted assessment by a certified canine behavioral specialist or allow my friends family to re-home their dog. Additionally, there could be an organized initiative to inform and ease the community's concerns about larger dog breeds, emphasizing responsible pet ownership and correct training.

We believe that education and understanding can overcome fear and misconceptions, allowing Chico to stay with his loving family where he belongs. Please join us in urging the city authorities to consider this proposal and spare Chico's life. Your signature can make a significant difference in keeping this family whole.
