Allow Minor Religious and Responsible Drinking in Arkansas

The Issue

I, along with many other families in Arkansas, engage in religious rituals that include the consumption of wine. As a Christian family, we partake in Communion, a sacred ceremony involving wine and bread. However, current Arkansas law restricts our right to practice this religious ritual in the comfort of our homes because the law prohibits individuals under the age of 21 from drinking alcohol, even under parental supervision on private property.

This differs from other states such as Texas, Colorado, and Ohio, where minors can legally consume alcohol on private property with parental consent. These laws acknowledge that parents are often the best judges of what's suitable for their children in certain contexts, such as religious observance or family celebrations.

Moreover, studies show that environments where parental supervision is present can lead to better drinking habits later in life. A World Health Organization report on alcohol and underage drinking indicates that moderate and supervised underage drinking in a familial setting can minimize the allure and mystery associated with alcohol (World Health Organization, 2014).

Arkansas legislation should reflect the changing societal perspective that underage drinking, when moderately supervised, can be safer and contribute to healthier drinking habits in the long run. Therefore, we urge lawmakers to revise the current alcohol laws to allow underage drinking on private property with parental consent.
