Allow Installation of Tiny Homes on Residential Land in Newaygo and Brooks Township

The Issue

As someone with a deeply personal stake in this issue, I recently purchased a plot of land next to my parents to care for my mother who is living with dementia. My original plan was to construct a tiny home on this piece of land. However, I was met with the harsh reality that zoning rules in Newaygo and Brooks Township currently prohibit such constructions, demanding a minimum requirement of 24x36. This realization has prompted me to create this petition, calling for changes in these regulations that impact not just me, but countless others who believe in more flexible housing options.

Tiny homes provide significant economic benefits for those who choose to live in them. They offer a more cost-effective way to own a home, thus opening up opportunities for many low-income families to own a property. This could potentially have a powerful positive impact on our local communities. As individuals are able to save costs on housing, they are likely to redirect that expenditure to local businesses, thereby improving our economy.

Nationwide, the tiny home movement has been gaining momentum, and many are seeing the practical and financial benefits of these homes. According to the 2018 International Residential Code, Appendix Q, tiny homes can be allowed as permanent housing (source: Building Code for Tiny Houses). As such, our townships are lagging behind this progressive trend.

It's high time we reevaluate these zoning laws and take into consideration not only the personal benefits of such housing arrangements, but the broader community benefits as well. Together, we can create a more inclusive and economically empowering environment for our neighbors. Please join me in urging the city of Newaygo and Brooks Township to allow tiny homes on residential land. Sign this petition today to make a change for tomorrow.
