The Issue

Some of my fondest memories of school were being able to dress up and have fun with my friends during Halloween. It was a time of joy, creativity, and community spirit that brought students, teachers, and staff closer together. Unfortunately, this beloved tradition is no longer part of our school's annual calendar in Baldwinsville, NY, and I believe that we need to bring it back.

Halloween is not just about costumes and candy; it’s an opportunity for children to express themselves, engage in cultural activities, and learn about traditions from around the world. In many schools across the country, Halloween celebrations contribute to fostering inclusivity, creativity, and a sense of belonging among the students. They get the chance to showcase their unique personalities through their costumes and participate in a range of fun, educational activities.

Banning Halloween celebrations can inadvertently suppress students' creativity and limit their cultural experiences. According to a study by the National Retail Federation, approximately 68% of people in the US celebrate Halloween, making it an integral part of our collective culture. Schools can play a crucial role in teaching students the importance of cultural traditions and community engagement through such events.

By allowing Halloween to be celebrated in Baldwinsville schools, we can encourage a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel free to express themselves. Moreover, this celebration can help uplift students' spirits, improve school morale, and create lasting memories that they will cherish just like I do.

I understand that there are concerns regarding inclusivity and respecting diverse beliefs, but these can be addressed by ensuring Halloween celebrations are optional and held in a respectful manner. For instance, schools could provide alternative activities for those who do not wish to participate, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and included.

I urge the Baldwinsville School District to reconsider this decision and to bring back Halloween celebrations in our schools. Let's allow our children to create wonderful memories and enjoy the many benefits that come from embracing cultural festivities.

Please join me in signing this petition to reinstate Halloween celebrations in Baldwinsville schools and help make our community an even more vibrant and inclusive place for our children to learn and grow.
