Allow Graduation Cap Covers/Decorations!!

The Issue

I am here to make a change & stand up for our current graduates and Future graduates. Students should be free to express themselves during their graduation. The First Amendment ensures freedom of speech, and denying students the right to decorate their caps is a violation of that right. They should be able to use that right and say or express what they want on their grad caps, as long as the decoration does not violate the school dress code.

Decorated caps would give graduates a way to celebrate their personal success throughout the entire ceremony rather than just having a short walk across a stage. Decorating caps gives students the opportunity to showcase their creativity, their individuality and their personal success. The caps can be decorated to show what college students plan to attend, what their interests or hobbies are, or simply what makes them unique.

The excuse that it’s too difficult to police 500+ students is not a reason- the faculty & staff police 2000+ students on a daily basis. Approving caps as they approve attire when graduates walk in doesn’t seem too difficult. We tell our kids they can be whatever they want to be and we applaud their desire to freely express themselves. They’ve worked hard to earn those caps- let them celebrate it!

The possibility of students inappropriately decorating their caps with insensitive, vulgar or ignorant content is fairly low. They aren’t going to risk giving up graduation for a joke. Administration could just take away the inappropriately decorated caps or not allow them to walk.

I’m sure as parents there would be someone that are willing to step up help if extra monitoring needs to be in place.
