Allow GCPS seniors to decorate graduation caps
The Issue
I am a rising senior at South Gwinnett High School (a Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) school), and I want to be able to express myself creatively during one of the most significant milestones of my life—high school graduation by being allowed to decorate my graduation cap. Graduation day is not just an end, but a celebration of years of hard work, personal growth, and resilience. As students, we’ve grown and changed, each in our own unique ways. Yet, on the day we commemorate our achievements, GCPS restricts us from adding a personal touch to our celebration by disallowing us from decorating our graduation caps.
The tradition of decorating graduation caps is a newer, but fun tradition increasingly embraced by more and more schools across the nation. It allows students to express their personalities, memories, and future aspirations in a visually impactful and creative manner. It's a form of personal storytelling, where each cap becomes a canvas that reflects the individuality of the student wearing it. More than just a display, it's an opportunity to add joy and fun to a ceremonial event, bringing smiles and pride not only to ourselves but also to our families and friends.
This practice could be easily implemented with specific guidelines to ensure that decorations are appropriate and respectful, keeping in line with school values and policies. For instance, decoration ideas could be submitted for review and approval ahead of time to maintain the ceremony's dignity while embracing creativity and self-expression.
Schools across our country, have successfully adopted this tradition as part of their graduation ceremonies. It’s time for GCPS to take a forward-thinking step in granting this simple yet meaningful request to its seniors.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a future where students in GCPS can enjoy a more personalized and memorable graduation experience. Let’s honor and embrace our accomplishments with creativity. Please sign this petition to allow the class of 2027 and all future GCPS graduates the chance to express themselves and celebrate their achievements in a meaningful way. If we all work together towards change, we can make change happen.
