The Issue

Living in New Braunfels, Texas, means accepting a rich history, beautiful scenery, and a tight-knit community. Yet, as a resident who pays city taxes, it's frustrating to face the additional burden of paying for parking when visiting our beloved downtown area. We should not have to endure what feels like a double taxation: first through our city taxes and then again through parking fees for streets our contributions already help maintain.

The proposal is simple yet impactful: allow city residents the option to obtain a parking pass or window decal, granting up to 3 hours of free parking in downtown New Braunfels. This initiative respects the financial contributions of local taxpayers and reaffirms our right to enjoy public spaces without unnecessary financial hindrances.

The current approach to downtown parking discourages local residents from frequenting and enjoying our own area's attractions. This not only leads to dissatisfaction among taxpaying residents but also impacts local businesses that thrive on the patronage of both residents and visitors alike.

Moreover, offering this benefit to residents isn't just a matter of economics or fairness; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and community. By allowing us to park in our own city without extra fees, New Braunfels can more effectively unite its community, driving home the idea that our city works for us—its people.

Join me in urging the New Braunfels City Council to recognize the value in supporting its residents by implementing a free parking pass system. Help us alleviate the economic strain on taxpaying citizens and enhance the harmony between residents and our shared environment. Sign this petition to advocate for fair treatment and increased community access for New Braunfels residents.

I’ve seen the petition and I’m aware of the concerns that have been raised about downtown parking. I want to let residents know that there will be an update to the parking policy presented for consideration at the upcoming City Council meeting. I’ve been going out and visiting each of the downtown businesses to talk with them about the impact of the new parking policy. These businesses were the group that originally requested the change because cars were parking in front of their storefronts and not moving for long periods. I wasn’t on Council at the time this initiative was introduced, so I wasn’t there when that request was made — but now I want to understand what the impact has been since it took effect. It’s still early, but I want to know what things look like after the first quarter of implementation. If businesses are losing money, that matters. I’ve also heard from some constituents who say they’re visiting downtown less often now, and I don’t want to see our local businesses hurt. I figured the best thing to do is be on the ground, ask the businesses directly, and take in their feedback — and I’ve already started that process. I’ve also offered four different potential solutions to help address some of the concerns about parking. My goal is to take all perspectives into account as we review the policy and find a balance that works for both residents and businesses. This is Donald Edwards, Councilman District 3 in New Braunfels. You had called me about your petition, and so I'm aware of it. A portion of the petition was presented at the last council meeting, and as some of the items were taken into consideration while we are deliberating on a number of different areas and items. While this project is fluid, nothing's in stone as of yet. Thank you for your interest. Have a good day.
