The Issue

This is to propose a change in legislation regarding the Step up for students pep program. The change we are seeking is to allow PEP recipient students to use scholarship esa funds, and to be reimbursed for laptops, desktop computers, printers, printer ink, scanners and other necessary devices, such as e-readers,  and supplies. These devices and supplies are necessary in educating students in the program through online curriculum, creating worksheets, quizzes, tests, and so much more as required by curriculum platforms, assignments, and other educational programs. Within other step up for students programs, these devices and supplies are allowed, though not for pep recipients. The pep program states it is to afford its students the same opportunities as afforded to them in a classroom setting, though it contradicts itself by not allowing the aforementioned items, yet does allow televisions which have far less productive educational value. For these reasons, we, the parents of pep recipients, urge Florida leaders, lawmakers,to allow recipients the ability to have laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, ink, and more in order to allow our children the technological equalities afforded to other step up for students programs and those recipients. Afterall, internet service is allowed as an expense, but what good does it do if a child has no computer, what good is a program that provides online curriculum if it cannot be accessed, if worksheets, assignments, and more cannot be printed, and in a technological age, what educational value is it to not allow these items within such a great program, and it's recipients. We urge you, our Florida lawmakers and leaders to make this very necessary change for the upcoming school year, and for beyond.
