Allow Flexible Lunch Seating for Middle School Students in SCMS

Allow Flexible Lunch Seating for Middle School Students in SCMS

The Issue

As a group of concerned 7th graders in Charlotte, NC, we find the current lunch seating policy at our school restrictive and unfair in SCMS. The policy that prevents us from choosing where to sit during lunchtime is hindering our freedom to spend valuable time with our friends.

This issue is personal to us because it affects our social interactions and overall school experience. Having the freedom to choose where we sit can significantly improve our well-being and sense of belonging in school. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, peer relationships play a crucial role in adolescent development and mental health.

We understand that discipline is important; however, using lunch seating as a form of punishment seems excessive and highly unneeded as the other policies that have been put into place are even more restricting & restricting than before. We propose an alternative solution - allow all 6th, 7th, & 8th graders the right to choose their lunch seating arrangement unless they have two detentions/AHLs.

We believe this change will foster better social interactions among students while maintaining discipline within the school environment. We urge you to consider this proposal for the benefit of all 6th, 7th, & 8th graders in SCMS.
