Allow Experienced LPNs to Challenge the RN NCLEX
Allow Experienced LPNs to Challenge the RN NCLEX
The Issue
We are two Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with a combined experience of 45 years in active nursing. Despite our desire to further our education, life circumstances and financial constraints have made it challenging for us to do so. Yet, we have devoted our lives to caring for others and continue to aspire towards enhancing our skills and contributing more significantly to the nursing community.
We believe that LPNs like us, with over 20 years of experience, should be allowed to challenge the Registered Nurse (RN) National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). This would provide an opportunity for experienced nurses who have been unable to pursue further formal education due to various reasons but still wish to contribute at a higher level in their profession.
Accordingly, we propose that regulatory bodies consider this as an alternative pathway towards becoming an RN. This is not unprecedented; some states like California already allow LVN's (Licensed Vocational Nurses) with equivalent work experience or completed coursework in lieu of traditional educational requirements [source: California Board of Registered Nursing].
This change could potentially benefit thousands of experienced LPNs across the country who are eager for career advancement but hindered by life circumstances. It would also help address the nationwide shortage of registered nurses which is projected by The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Employment Projections program estimates that there will be over one million vacancies for registered nurses by 2024 [source: U.S Bureau Of Labor Statistics]. In addition, it will generate revenue for Tennessee through examination fees.
We urge you all - fellow healthcare professionals, patients who value experienced care providers, and anyone else who believes in fair opportunities - please sign this petition. Your support can make a significant difference not only in our lives but also improve patient care quality across healthcare facilities nationwide.
