The Issue

The recent decision by the City of York Council to close Rougier Street to all traffic except buses is affecting the daily lives of many residents, including myself. This change means that approximately 7,000 journeys daily will now be diverted along Skeldergate Bridge, leading into Nunnery Lane, Bishopthorpe Road, and Scarcroft Road. This detour not only adds significant time to these journeys but also increases costs, with some trips to and from the train station costing an additional £2 to £5.

As someone who relies on these routes for regular travel, the financial burden of this decision is both unfair and unnecessary. This especially affects those using taxis, as the increased fare adds up over time, impacting our budgets and overall commuting experience.

However, a reasonable solution could be implemented. By allowing Hackney Carriages, blue badge holders, and wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV) to also travel along Rougier Street, the council can minimize disruptions without compromising their goals for traffic management. These exceptions would alleviate the inconvenience faced by many, including taxi users and individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring that travel remains accessible and affordable.

City councils often need to find a balance between managing traffic flow and catering to the needs of their citizens. By making these exemptions, York Council can support those who diversely depend on these crucial routes, easing the strain on local residents and businesses alike.

I urge the residents of York to support this petition. By signing, you help us uphold fairness in our community and advocate for sensible adjustments to local traffic policies. Let's ensure that travel remains efficient and affordable for everyone. Sign this petition to call for change that considers all community members' needs.
