The Issue

I have been a client of Pawnee Mental Health since 2022 and have frequently required the services of the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). Until recently, emotional support animals (ESAs) were allowed to accompany their owners during their stay, offering much-needed emotional and psychological support. However, a policy change this summer has discontinued this practice, creating a significant impact on clients like me who rely on the comfort and calming presence of their ESAs.

Imagine facing a mental health crisis and having to part with your ESA, the very source of your support and stability, at a critical time. Not only does this policy leave clients without their trusted companions, but it also adds the stress of arranging care for these animals during an already stressful period. The abrupt separation from an ESA can heighten anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges, undermining the very reason for seeking stabilization in the CSU.

ESAs play a pivotal role in helping individuals manage their mental health symptoms. Studies have shown that ESAs can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while promoting a sense of calm and security. These benefits are especially crucial in a crisis stabilization setting where emotional equilibrium is vulnerable.

I urge Pawnee Mental Health to reconsider this policy change and allow ESAs to support their owners during their stay in the CSU. Including ESAs in the CSU not only aligns with the therapeutic mission of the unit but also respects the unique needs of every client. Clients are more likely to achieve positive outcomes in their treatment when they have the necessary emotional tools at their disposal.

Join me in urging Pawnee Mental Health to restore the previous policy and allow emotional support animals to accompany their owners during stays in the Crisis Stabilization Unit. Sign this petition to bring this necessary change and optimize the mental health support system for those in urgent need.
