The Issue

One of the main reasons I purchased an electric vehicle (EV) was to use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes during my daily commute. Since the law permitting EVs access to these lanes expired, many EV owners, like myself, have found ourselves forced back into the mainstream traffic. This has contributed to even more congestion on our roads and added unnecessary time to our commutes.

Electric vehicles offer numerous environmental benefits, contributing to reduced air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. By encouraging more drivers to adopt EVs, we can collectively work toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. Offering EVs access to HOV lanes is a strong incentive for potential buyers looking to switch to greener transportation options. It not only rewards those who have already made this eco-conscious choice but also promotes faster adoption of clean technology.

Numerous studies have shown that traffic congestion has significant negative impacts on both the environment and public health. According to the Federal Highway Administration, vehicles stuck in traffic congestion waste almost 3.1 billion gallons of fuel each year in the United States alone. This results in increased emissions of pollutants, including CO2, which is detrimental to our planet's health.

Reinstating EV access to the HOV lanes will help alleviate congestion. It's a logical step to prioritize cleaner vehicles, minimizing their time on the road and, consequently, their environmental footprint. This move will not only streamline traffic flow for everyone but also support government goals on sustainable transport and emissions reductions.

We urge local governments and transportation authorities to reconsider and renew the law granting EVs access to HOV lanes. Let's work together towards a future where our roads are cleaner, less congested, and more efficient. Join us by signing this petition to show your support for sustainable commuting solutions and a healthier, greener environment.
